Super Sarah goes the distance

Sarah Hutchinson, Regional Operations Manager at Abbeyfield Living Society (ALS), took on The Wall on 13-14 June, running an incredible 70 miles along Hadrian’s Wall from Carlisle to Newcastle.

The distance was especially meaningful, with one mile for every year of Abbeyfield’s 70-year history.

Sarah said: “Taking on 70 miles felt like a fitting way to mark Abbeyfield’s 70th anniversary. It was challenging, but it also gave me time to reflect on the difference Abbeyfield has made to so many lives and the dedication of our colleagues and volunteers.”

After months of training through rain, wind and freezing temperatures, Sarah completed the challenge in an impressive 21 hours.

She was supported along the route by Abbeyfield colleagues, residents and supporters. After staying at Loveday House in Wigton before the event, Sarah passed Riverhill in Corbridge, where residents had put out water, snacks and fruit for runners. Celebrations then awaited her at Hope Bank View in Sunderland after she crossed the finish line.

“Knowing that residents and staff were cheering me on kept me going when things got tough,” Sarah said.

Sarah originally hoped to raise £500, but quickly exceeded her target and raised it to £1,956, marking Abbeyfield’s founding year. She has now raised more than £2,000 to support Abbeyfield’s work with older people across the country.
