How does an Abbeyfield house combat loneliness?

Welcome to episode three of Abbeyfield Presents: Hidden Treasures. This episode takes a thoughtful look at loneliness and social isolation in later life, the values that shaped the Abbeyfield legacy, and the sense of belonging found in our houses.

Our hosts, Michele Wainwright, General Secretary of Abbeyfield England, and Adam Rees, Chief Executive of Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham, explore the difference between social isolation and loneliness. Social isolation is the lack of meaningful contact, something the World Health Organisation says affects 1 in 4 older people. Loneliness, however, is a feeling that can occur even when surrounded by others, and 1 in 10 older people experience this too.

Richard Carr‑Gomm founded Abbeyfield on the belief that no one should face loneliness in later life. In this episode, Connections – From Loneliness to Laughter, our hosts share how Abbeyfield houses bring this belief to life.

Staff from one of our Bristol houses offer warm stories of residents who arrived quiet and withdrawn but soon discovered confidence, friendship, and a place where they truly belong. Residents themselves speak about what makes their Abbeyfield house feel like home—the conversations, shared stories, board games, quizzes, and moments of joy. Some activities are even led by residents, like Pete’s popular quiz filled with fun challenges.

From shared meals to gentle walks, these everyday experiences help ease loneliness and bring happiness. Local community groups, from choirs to children’s groups to pets, also play a part by bringing fresh social connections into the house—an open‑door spirit inspired by Richard Carr‑Gomm’s original vision.

Take a moment to reflect on social isolation and loneliness and consider how each of us can make a difference—especially within an Abbeyfield house.

International learning and the Abbeyfield spirit

We were delighted to recently welcome Oscar Lustin, Co-founder of Domani in France, to Father Popieluszko House in Acton, part of the Abbeyfield London Polish Society. The visit was a fascinating exchange of ideas and experiences, and a reminder that while housing and care systems may look different from one country to another, the values that underpin them can be remarkably similar.
