In the first episode of Abbeyfield Presents: Hidden Treasures, Abbeyfield England launches a new podcast series by reflecting on the ideas, people and values that have shaped the Abbeyfield movement for 70 years — and by asking why something so special has remained one of the best kept secrets.

As Abbeyfield marks its 70th anniversary, this opening conversation looks back to 1956, when founder Richard Carr-Gomm opened the first Abbeyfield house in Bermondsey. His simple belief — that people are better off living together in community rather than alone — grew into a movement of Abbeyfield societies supporting older people to live independently while staying connected.

In this debut episode, Welcome to Abbeyfield, Michele Wainwright, General Secretary of Abbeyfield England, is joined by Adam Rees, Chief Executive of Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham. Together, they explore how Abbeyfield’s founding principles continue to shape Abbeyfield societies today, and why Abbeyfield is so often described as “the best kept secret” — and why it’s time more people knew who we are and what we do.

The episode also features reflections from Sue Perry, whose Abbeyfield journey spans many roles — from staff member to active trustee. Sue shares personal memories of Richard Carr-Gomm and offers insight into the values that have endured across generations, reflecting the deep sense of commitment that runs through the Abbeyfield movement.

Throughout the conversation, Michele and Adam reflect on the role Abbeyfield societies play within their local communities, the importance of volunteers and staff, and the many “hidden treasures” that make Abbeyfield houses special — from shared meals and companionship to independence, dignity and belonging in later life.
