Abbeyfield York's exciting expansion
Abbeyfield York Society is thrilled to share some exciting news, as the society has officially opened its brand-new Extra Care development, a beautifully designed scheme featuring 25 high-quality apartments – 6 leasehold and 19 rental. This development offers a safe, supportive, and independent living setting specifically tailored to the needs of older people.
His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Johanna Ropner, officiated the opening of the new building and it was a proud and celebratory occasion for everyone involved, including residents, staff, trustees, and partners.
Expanding reach with enrichment day services
In addition to welcoming its new residents, Abbeyfield York Society is also delighted to announce the launch of its Enrichment Day Services. This important new offering allows the society to extend its support to the wider community, providing opportunities for connection, creativity, and wellbeing beyond its residential setting.
These services are designed to support older people living in the local area who can benefit from engaging activities, social interaction, and tailored support throughout the day.
This milestone marks a significant new chapter for Abbeyfield York Society as it continues to grow its impact, both within its homes and across the broader community.
A legacy of support
Over the years, Abbeyfield York has evolved. What began as five smaller homes spread across the city has now amalgamated into two larger, purpose-built residential homes with enhanced facilities: Abbeyfield House 1 and Abbeyfield House 2. These two houses can now accommodate up to 50 residents and offer a wider choice of communal activities.
The total cost of this incredible project was in the region of £6.5 million. The Trustees are incredibly grateful to the many Abbeyfield Societies whose significant financial contributions made this development possible. This includes those who provided recycled capital grants, such as Abbeyfield Widnes Society, Abbeyfield Sheffield/Christchurch, Abbeyfield Grimsby and Cleethorpes Society, and Abbeyfield Loughborough Society.
Some of these funds became available due to the closure of other homes, and their support has ensured Abbeyfield's mission can continue thriving in the York Society.
Abbeyfield York Society is grateful to everyone who joined in celebrating and supporting this key milestone. They look forward to seeing the positive impact of these new developments on the lives of older people in York.
