From bingo, ball games, singing and dancing to memorials for lost friends, Friars Mead Residential Care Home had a busy July. Friars Mead, part of the Abbeyfield Hertfordshire Residential Care Society, had an eventful month, with activities, games and more. Let’s see what they’ve been up to!

July marked many occasions for the residents of Friars Mead. They celebrated the Abbeyfield Movement’s 70th anniversary and Friars Mead’s own 35th anniversary! Resident Tessa managed to win some high-stakes games of bingo, twice! She ended the day happy with a few new well-earned chocolate bars in her possession. Residents took reduce, reuse and recycle seriously this month, when they repurposed old birthday cards and made some lovely cards for the home.

Residents played lots of games inside the house, allowing themselves to stay active and have fun! Gameplay plays an important role in the lives of Abbeyfield residents. It gives opportunities to make conversation and create special moments of connection. These shared experiences not only help improve the residents' physical wellbeing but also strengthen friendships and the sense of community within the house.

July also marked a loss for the residents of Friars Mead, as they said goodbye to resident Rosemary. Staff put together a lovely memorial for residents and Rosemary’s family to attend, in which they discussed fond memories of her and celebrated her life while having afternoon tea.

Among other things, the residents did lots of singing and dancing in July, with staff happily joining in for a boogie around the house! The staff went out of their way to make July a special month by building a complete wall of old memories for the residents to reminisce about. Residents loved seeing how things have changed and looking back fondly.

Celebrations! Friars Mead held their annual BBQ garden party, but it was extra special this year. Residents, family members, staff, volunteers, and members of the local community came together to celebrate 35 years of amazing care and support that Friars Mead has given their residents. Additionally, the Abbeyfield Movement’s 70th anniversary is this year. Marking 75 years since founder Richard Carr-Gomm established the first Abbeyfield house and began his mission of combating loneliness for people in later life and building small communities. The celebrations were a great success at Friars Mead, with everyone enjoying the great food, laughter, and conversation.

The month was rounded off with the residents' annual boat trip! Residents headed off for a fun-filled day of boat rides, picnics, quizzes and beautiful views of the canal.
