We spoke to Gary See, Chair of Abbeyfield England, about his leadership role and his vision for the organisation.
How long have you been Chair of AE, and what other experience do you have working with older people?
I became Chair earlier this year. Alongside this, I’ve spent many years leading community organisations that support older people through social connection, wellbeing activities, and practical support, so a role at Abbeyfield is a natural fit.
What was it about Abbeyfield attracted you to the role?
Abbeyfield’s focus on community, independence and dignity really stood out to me. It’s a model that genuinely puts people first, with people-centred care and support at the heart of everything we do.
How does your professional experience lend itself to your role as a trustee and Chair?
My background in leadership, governance and community delivery helps me stay focused on both strategic direction and real-world impact, enabling me to have a real impact chairing the Board.
What does your role of Chair typically entail?
My role involved leading the Board, ensuring strong governance, supporting trustees, representing our members at a national level, championing their work, and helping shape the direction and priorities of Abbeyfield England.
Which part of the role do you most enjoy?
My favourite aspect is working with passionate people across the network who are making a real difference in their communities. It’s great to see the impact that our amazing staff and volunteers have on the lives of our residents and beyond.
What are the largest challenges you face in your role?
It can be challenging to balancing our ambition with sustainability. We also need to ensure we support a diverse network of societies facing different local pressures – each Abbeyfield is unique but we are all part of one family.
How do you work with Abbeyfield societies and staff to support, motivate and inspire them to deliver the best possible service for their residents?
I try to listen, be visible and approachable, and create the right environment where people feel supported, valued and confident to lead locally.
What are you most excited about for Abbeyfield England over the next few months?
We will continue to strengthen our network and build momentum around shared priorities. I look forward to creating a clear, confident future for Abbeyfield England and all of our members.
