Features
Abbeyfield House is ideally located close to the centre of Brecon, enjoying superb views of the stunning Brecon Beacons from every flat. Originally built in the 1970s as a centre for young people with learning disabilities, the house was purchased in 1997 by Abbeyfield Brecon Society and thoughtfully transformed into retirement accommodation.
Abbeyfield House offers a friendly, supportive community in a safe and attractive setting. There are twelve self-contained residential flats designed to provide comfortable and independent living for older people. Each flat includes a living room with kitchenette, a bedroom, and an en-suite shower room. Some flats are suitable for double occupancy, and all first-floor flats are served by a lift.
Flats are carpeted and unfurnished, allowing residents to personalise their space with their own furniture, photographs, and treasured belongings to truly make it feel like home. Please note that, at present, the flats are not suitable for wheelchair users.
Residents prepare their own breakfasts in their flats, while a freshly cooked two-course lunch and a lighter evening meal are served daily in the communal dining room. Abbeyfield House also offers shared facilities including a laundry room, bathrooms on each floor, a hairdressing salon, a library/quiet room, and an honesty shop stocked with everyday essentials and more. Wi-Fi is available throughout the house, enabling residents to stay connected with family and friends and enjoy using their devices.
Our professional and caring House Manager, supported by dedicated staff, ensures that Abbeyfield House is warm, comfortable, and secure. Meals are nutritious and enjoyable, with some herbs and vegetables grown in our own gardens and the remainder sourced locally wherever possible. Staff are available during the day to provide light-touch support, with Trustees and volunteers also forming part of the wider support network.
Throughout the year, Abbeyfield House hosts a variety of social events, such as Burns Night celebrations, an indoor Christmas Market, afternoon teas, and Macmillan Coffee Mornings. During the festive season, residents are entertained by children from local primary schools singing carols, as well as performances by the local wind band.
Abbeyfield House is situated in a quiet area of Brecon, a welcoming market town offering a wide range of amenities. These include shops, supermarkets, cafés, pubs, a theatre, cinema, leisure centre, library and cultural hub, doctors’ surgery, dental practice, chemists, and a cottage hospital, as well as ambulance and fire services. Brecon is also home to a beautiful cathedral and a variety of denominational churches.
The town has an active community life, with numerous clubs, societies, and walking groups. Many amenities are within walking distance of Abbeyfield House, and residents may also use the town’s Dial-a-Ride service at a modest cost, along with readily available taxis. Brecon Market takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays, with monthly craft fairs and farmers’ markets.
Brecon hosts several annual cultural events, including the Brecon Jazz Festival and the Brecon Baroque Music Festival. Nearby Hay-on-Wye is world-famous for its literary festival, attracting renowned authors and speakers from around the globe.
The town also has a long and proud association with the Gurkha Regiment, who regularly parade through Brecon. Visitors can explore this rich history at the Regimental Museum or view memorial artefacts in the Memorial Chapel at Brecon Cathedral.
There is a regular bus service to nearby towns such as Abergavenny and Crickhowell, as well as to Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. The bus station is just a ten-minute walk from Abbeyfield House. As a gateway to the Brecon Beacons National Park, Brecon is a popular destination for walkers, hikers, and nature lovers.
Abbeyfield House is managed by Abbeyfield Brecon Society, providing a warm, supportive, and community-focused place to call home.
