An Enriching Retirement at Abbeyfield

When considering housing options for older people, many people picture large, impersonal care homes or sheltered housing. At Abbeyfield, we are proud to offer a retirement living that genuinely feels like home. In this blog, we discuss what makes an 'Abbeyfield house' unique.

A warm welcome, tailored to you

Many of our residents describe a “warm welcome” after moving into an Abbeyfield house. We create purpose-built, or smaller, more intimate houses for older people across England and Wales. Our houses and homes are a representation of community spirit, where everyone knows each other, and each person’s preferences are considered, friendships are built, and bonds are formed.

Each Abbeyfield house and its membership offers something unique. Whether it's our supported houses providing a homely atmosphere with companionship and meals, our residential care homes offering more assistance with daily living, or our dementia specialist homes providing expert, compassionate care in a safe environment, we have a range of options designed to meet individual needs and preferences.

Home-cooked meals, shared laughter, and familiarities

Food is at the heart of any Abbeyfield home. Our residents enjoy delicious, freshly prepared, home-cooked meals every day. Imagine the comforting aroma of a Sunday roast or your favourite pudding wafting from the kitchen. Mealtimes are often a social occasion at Abbeyfield, where stories are shared, and laughter is heard among the halls, just as you would imagine in a family home. We also support those with familiar routines and personalise our services, because feeling at home means being able to live life the way you want to.

Your space: A home-from-home

Our houses and homes often have multiple communal spaces, sometimes used for exercise or activities, but we understand the importance of having your own space too. Each resident has their own space in our houses, a place where they can bring their beloved furniture, photographs, and personal treasures. Residents often describe their rooms or apartments as an extension of their past and a reflection of their personality. Somewhere they can relax, unwind, and feel safe, surrounded by the things that truly matter to them.

A family of support, not just staff

The true Abbeyfield difference is in the relationships built within our houses and homes. Our dedicated house managers, carers, nurses, activities and wellbeing coordinators and volunteers are all part of our extended family. They know our residents individually – their preferences, their stories, their humour. This understanding allows for genuine care and companionship, creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and understood.

At Abbeyfield, we believe that later life should be lived with comfort, and joy, surrounded by companionship. It's about providing the safety and support you need, and enriching your life, without losing that homely feeling.
